This device has a wire-mesh drum about 12" in diameter. The drum is
turned by a wind-motor under control of a wood-block style Skinner
magnet. Inside the drum are steel balls (I have not determined whether
they are genuine EMSkinner) that make a noise when they roll over the
wire mesh. I guess it's supposed to sound like rain--I'll let you know
when I get it hooked up.
I understand the Kimball rain machine was similar. Wurlitzer used a blast
of air blowing over a 'tin' plate. It sounded more like a giant wind leak.
Robert Morton had steel balls too, but they rolled over a flat framework
that tilted one direction and then another. I think it sounded more like
surf than rain. In fact, all of these devices were called 'rain' or 'surf'.
