First of all I would like to introduce myself as I am new to the list. I am
Dept. Head of Fine Arts/Media and Music Librarian at the Univ. of Georiga and
also and organist with a BM and MM in organ performance. I am forwarding the
bibliographic data for the IBM PC software programs we have ordered for our
library. I would refer Jeffrey to a review of these programs that appeared in
and issue of the American Organist sometime within the past 14 months. I am
sorry I can't provide the issue information as I can not locate my copy at the
moment. I could not tell if Jeffrey already had MIDI capability or not - but -
these all have a MIDI interface, though they can be used without. I have used
the THEME package and find it very easy to use through the PC keyboard as I do
not have MIDI equipment on my PC at the office yet - though we are in the
process of getting a new complete system. NONE of these systems is perfect
though they do most everything one could want. It does not matter what package
is used if you do not have access to a laser printer. Dot-matrix just will not
produce a quality print - though I must admit that even dot-matrix is better
than my manuscript. The laser jets will give nice smooth beams while the d-m
printers give a stair-step effect to the beams. The prices are all over 100.00
and believe me - you get what you pay for - and what package yet get depends on
what you want to use it for. If you have a very difficult score to reproduce
you will need a more expensive package, if just simple anthem or hymn settings
with simple keyboard/instrumental accompaniments are what you want to creat a
less expensive package will work. I would also like to mention Songwright 5.1.
I have tried an earlier version but did not get it for our collection. It is
listed in the FEB 93 American Organist in the Misc. Class. ads. As with all
things related to PC's and MAC's if you wait awhile things will change and
become better and more powerful while the price remains relative static or
sometimes even come down in cost. Good luck with the search for your program
of choice.
