This was forwarded to the organ list but Leighton has written some
playable works for harpsichord so I thought I'd forward the forwarded
message. Karen Jacob

Subject: Kenneth Leighton
While well
known in Great Britain and by a number of Anglicans and anglophiles in
the US, he still seems to me an unjustly neglected composer and I want to
take this moment to recommend his music to you.
Many of us find ourselves looking around for 20th century music that is of
good quality and yet accessible to a variety of choral ensembles. While
Leighton's choral output was largely sacred, there are also a number of secular
works as well. The difficulty ranges from moderately easy (Solus ad
victimam) to the quite difficult (Mass, Op. 44) with much in between.
Particularly wonderful are the Crucifixus pro nobis, Awake My Glory,
Mass, Sequence for All Saints, Three Carols, Op. 25, and Nativitie to
name just a few.
A Trust has been established to "get the word out" and to promote
performances of his works, and a number of CDs are available (or soon
will be). If you are interested in finding out more, donating to the
trust, or whatever, contact
Mrs J.A. Leighton

You can also contact me for information if you would like as well.
Most of the music is held by Novello (or by whoever is holding Novello,
Music Sales currently) or by Roberton. There are unpublished works at the
University of Edinburgh also.
Hope you'll be interested in looking into the works of this very gifted
composer.
Sincerely,
Bruce
