Doesn't retuning a harpsichord to 'sound good' in F# invalidate the
very principle of well-temperament: that a well-tempered keyboard can
already be played in any key?
I am curious: when performers record the WTC do they use different tunings
for different pieces? If so this would seem rather ironic. We generally
claim that Bach was proving the versatility of a well-tempered keyboard. To
record this collection but require various tunings would seem to prove the
opposite. Can anyone comment on current recordings? Joseph, if you were
involved in such a recording in the future, what would you do?
