I think it was at an early AMIS meeting in Boston that I saw and heard a double after the Stehlin in the Smithsomian by Burta and Walter Burr. It looked gorgeous at the time, and I believe he said they did water gilding.
I am not directly familiar with that process except from descriptions. Perhaps someone who has done it will pitch in here?
