Actually, according to Laurence Libin and Michael Cole, it is neither; it
is an "upright pantelon". These two gentlemen spoke about and showed this
instrument in situ at the joint meeting of SEHKS and MHKS in 2002. Michael
suggested that it would sound a something like a dulcimer, though the
instrument was in no kind of shape to test that suggestion!
