Has anyone on the list (Maybe Tillman has) has any exposure to the German
Serien instruments in the context of their heyday.
What was the reason for choosing a Concert Wittmayer over say a similar
Neupert or Sassman (or vice versa? Was it reliability or tonal
superiority, to greater tonal variety? I suppose the size of the
instruments determined the price, but what actually caused a player to
choose one over the other. Did one brand sound better than another? Did
Wittmayer think his were better that Neupert's or Sperrhake? There must have
been a massive world market for these instruments.
It seems that the British, American and French harpsichords of tyhis period
we not a standardized as the German ones.
Can anyone please shed some light on this era of instrument making please?.
