I hope that this is not too far off-topic for this list.
I heard a wonderful performance of Haydn's Seven Last Words by the Lindsay
Quartet in Tours this week. The programme notes gave a history of the work,
which said that the quartet version was a transcription by Haydn of the
orchestral version, but went on to say that there was a version for keyboard
prepared under Haydn's supervision in the same year (1737) as the other two
versions. Finally there was a choral version made in 1796 to words by Baron
I have never seen or even heard of the keyboard version. Does anyone know if
it is extant, and if so whether there is a modern printed edition available?
Any information gratefully received.
