whether due to Lutheran influence or not, it is true and not just a 
legend. No other dialect has even the remotest similarity to modern 
Hochdeutsch.  Not today either. 
A better question might be what "modern Hochdeutsch"  has to do with 
"good German" as it was seen by the foremost writers, even today...
