It just occurred to me that there is a good succinct discussion of these
issues in a book that doesn't get mentioned on the list - "A Plain and Easy
Introduction to the Harpsichord,"  Ruth Nurmi, U. of NM Press, 1974.

And while I'm at it, why doesn't the book get mentioned?
