I've read the postings about transposers and am surprised at the trouble
so many have had with them. All the instruments at North Texas are
transposing, 2 Kingstons, a Dowd, a Phillips Grimaldi, and a little
Zuckermann Ital. single--also my own Phillips Guisti. The Dowd and the 2
Phillips' transpose to 392, 415 and 440. In the 17 years I've been here
we've had one broken jack from a dolt who didn't know what he was doing
(that was in the 80's). Otherwise we've never ever had any trouble with
them. I hit the ceiling about the Dowd jack, of course, and posted a very
strongly worded note about transposing without permission or knowledge
which seems to have done the trick. (I'll be happy to pass it along! it
is really threatening!)

At the moment, I'm using my Phillips for continuo with the Dallas Opera's
upcoming performances of Handel's Ariodante at 440, it's doing just
fine, and I'm having a blast. Should be a terrific show, if you're in the
area: Nov. 20,23,25 and 29. We're not talking touch sensitive keyboard
performances here, just, hopefully, good continuo playing. Conductor is
Graeme Jenkins, and he basically know's whats what about style, and the
singers are wonderful! Three notables, Juliana Gondek, sop.-Genevra
(she's on the McGegan recording), Vivica Genaux, mezzo-Ariodante, and
Brian Asawa, countertenor, Polinesso.

I played Poppea with them several years ago, and thank heavens for
transposers, including the one on the Klop continuo organ we own!

I will say that my Wm Hyman, 1976, does not transpose, and I've only been
sorry a few times. There was a modern flute player that kept after me to
play with her; I didn't want to, so I ordered the instrument at 415. My
cowardly days.

Best to all,
Lenora
