Hi all:
I would like to announce that I have decided to sell my lovely mid-1880s Broadwood “semi-grand” piano, and that I have posted photos of it on our related HPSCHD_L group on Facebook, since we cannot share photos here. I’m selling it because I just don’t have the skills and time to devote to the appropriate repertoire, and I think that it’s going to waste here.
I am asking only what I paid, which was absurdly little: $5,000, and recommending a supplementary budget of around $2,000 or so to have the hammers recovered with new felt, or, at the very least, the original felt reshaped. I am acquainted with two extremely skilled piano people near to me who can do this at the highest professional level.
My hope is that the instrument will come into the possession of someone who plays the repertoire with commitment and who understands the virtues of the straight-strung grand piano (at the cost of great volume and power from cross-stringing, there is remarkable pitch center in the very lowest bass, making it lyrical and singing). The action is essentially the same as that of the much earlier Broadwoods, but merely beefed up in mass. No double-escapement, but in fact, I, at least, am unable to make it not repeat. Touch is very light and fast and shallow, with a keydip of around 8mm.
A visit to Facebook’s sister site to HPSCHD_L will allow one to see the instrument. Of course, I would be most happy to share the photos with Facebook-averse members directly upon request.
Finally: all is in excellent working order, action bits and dampers, and all “defects” are pretty much cosmetic. Yes, refinished it would be a beauty, but that would certainly be an indulgence!
Offering this instrument on this List is a bit of a stretch of our mandated topics, but our own Dave K. has given permission for me to share this.
