Well, I for one was interested in Stephen's post, which clarified a number
of issues for me. I am surprised to see that he has been criticised for
presenting a reasonable and thoughtful exposition of what is, unavoidably, a
rather complicated subject, but one which is well within the subject
parameters of this list.

This harpsichord list is supported financially by an educational
institution, which suggests to me that its purpose is education as well as
mere entertainment. Sometimes this means hard work and concentrated thought.
You can delete any item unread if you're not interested.

The only possible criticism might be that it would be helpful to some
listers if long posts were flagged up as such in the subject line.
