Well, it's the time factor, I suppose.  Pianists see tuners slaving for over
an hour on a given piano, and that's wasted practice time at the competitive
places.  And trying to teach them the theory without the practice would seem
to them very weak tea.
 
How many even HIP organists take part in or inititiate thorough re-tunings,
even of just reeds?
