There is no question that tuning by ear puts you in control of the
temperament but more importantly you come to experience the
"essence" or color in a way that cannot be done with any electronic
means. However, in my work I am called on to set a great variety
of temperaments, often under less than ideal conditions and time
constraints and find that carrying an electronic tuner is of great
assistance. For ear tuning, two small pamphlets I would recommend
are the Jorgensen EQUAL BEATING TEMPERAMENT and the Klop HARPSICHORD
TUNING. Jorgensen is perhaps more accessible. Both are available
from HCH in Boston.
