I attended both "Harpsichord Festival Weeks" at Westminster Choir College (June 24 - 29, 1973 and June 17 - 22, 1974). Each of the featured harpsichordists gave an evening recital followed by a lecture or master class the following morning. In 1973 recitals were given by Ralph Kirkpatrick, Sylvia Marlowe, Igor Kipnis, and Blanche Winogron. Frances Cole gave an opening recital on June 24th.

In 1974 Frances Cole again gave an opening recital (on June 17th), and there were recitals by Fernando Valenti, Irma Rogell, Igor Kipnis, and Gustav Leonhardt, (again with a lecture or a master class following each), and there was also an evening "Harpsichordorama" highlighted by an improvisation for harpsichord and bass featuring Slam Stewart and Frances Cole, as well as some harpsichord solos by the 90-year-old Eubie Blake.

I have some programs from these events, as well as newspaper clippings, one with a picture of Frances Cole at her harpsichord. One program mentions that her instrument was built by Eric Herz in 1967. I could make copies if you contact me off-list.

I am searching for any information about the life, work and musicianship of the late Dr. Frances Elaine Cole (1937-1983) She established a number of Harpsichord Festivals out of Westminster College. I am also searching for her harpsichord built by Eric Hertz. This may or may not be correct, but it is a lead I am following: The instrument was a so-called Model E. It was disposed 2 x 8’, 1 x 4’, 1 x 16’ (no lute) and had pedal actuated registers. Unlike the Model F, there was no soundboard dedicated to the 16’. The instrument was approximately 8’ long (the Model F is 9’ long). The decor was English-style with burl panels, with cross-banded and inlaid borders. The serial number may have been in the 60s.

I would appreciate any notes, programs or information.

Thank you.

Sylvia Wall
