My own experience translating shows German to be between 20 and 30% longer
than English for the same subject. I cannot comment on the other languages.

When I translate, I make a two column layout with the original in the right
column and the translation in the left. It is very easy to follow how much
longer (or shorter as the case may be) he text is.
