Rather than the extra strings themselves, it is more likely that the extra length of bridge and soundboard area (if done right) would improve the ring of the last sounding strings.  But it is a feature that clearly, by the evidence of its absence, never appealed to the classical makers.  I think we may safely ignore the matter.
