Yeah, fight for resonance and chuck out those 4' dampers in the treble.
On some instruments you might find you can go down to middle c' without
dampers quite effectively. And cut the remainder of the 4' in little
flags so they only stop the string when the register is in the "on"
position.
Or you can go so far as several makers at a previous Boston
exhibition--leave out the 4' dampers entirely. (That was a bit much for
my ears.)
Other makers find it more user-friendly to keep all the dampers
throughout the compass, swearing that it makes the transposition process
easier. But some players have no trouble making their instruments jam up
with or without dampers: Just a little care is required either way...
