The vandalism happened anyway...When I arrived at the church to tune, I
discovered the instrument had been FORCED OPEN...The musicians had decided
to have an impromptu rehearsal without telling anyone (least of all ME) and,
finding the harpsichord locked, proceeded to FORCE IT OPEN, destroying the
lock, damaging paint in the keywell, and ripping out a chunk of wood on the
fallboard.
...I chose not to embarrass the musicians or the church by mentioning it
(had they significantly damaged the instrument itself I'd have raised hell).
Amazing. Reminds me of the time when I found a 4-inch nail (which had been
extracted from somewhere) in my Curry in an Indian restaurant in Amsterdam,
decided not to mention it but to put it on the edge of my plate, and then
the guy just took the plate away (and my money).
It all depends on what you call "significantly damaged." I would have taken
the instrument straight from there, favor or no favor, repaired the damage
and send them a bill to end all bills. You're one mellow-minded list owner.
