The unusual can be overdone no matter which device applied to alter the harpsichord's sound. Daquin, Rameau and even composers more adventurous like Soler or C.P.E. Bach can at a certain level of spice be allowed to taste--as long as used with 18th century decorum and not over done as though played at a circus tent.
The Soler duos for harpsichord and organ can be even more distinctive with unusual stops and so forth. Dalza's Passamezzo does very well with these sounds I have found though not at all faithful to his period--good for repeats and processional need for variation. Set as a guitar/harpsichord duo this piece is just grand & buff/etc. can enhance the setting of timbres.
I would caution that one program a very good standard blockbuster after these pyrotechnics many audience need the mental change, although it really depends on the venue.
When playing on a sailing vessel--one must do simply everything. A dandy with 3 & 1/2 foot peruqe-tail would expect no less.
