To James from Los Alamos:
David Calhoun is a very good friend and I value his work
immensely.
He has rebuilt a surprising number of Burtons, Zuckerman Zboxes
and the like.
He's very good at it.
Zboxes and Burtons are of the "kit" genre, way up the food chain
from
the "factory" harpsichords. Ed Kottick tells me that some
factory harpsichords
do belong in museums. I am going to inspect a Pleyel this
Tuesday. We'll see what I find. I expect a tiny sound in a big
heavy box.
| The kits have held their value surprisingly well and some of
them
| sound quite good.
| I have in my shop two Zuckerman straightsides, one which sounds
| like a real harpsichord and one which does not. Go figure.
The
| customer which owns the lousy one spent more money to get it
going. It
| was worth it to him. The actions are the same on both
| instruments, but the sound is light years apart.
|
| Cheers
