This has been an interesting topic. As I have been a builder, I will
offer my perspective. I only go through the ghosting process when I am
equipping a whole register with new jacks or all new plectra. I adjust
the register to what I think is a safe "off" position (the backs of all
the jacks not interfering with any strings behind them). I then move the
register _very_ slightly toward the "on" position and lock it in
position using the capstan screws at both ends.
With the register fixed, I ghost all the plectra one after the other. I
will allow some tiny variation in the volume of the ghost sound but I
never permit it to be strong. I always cut the plectrum with the proper
bevel cut at its tip to shorten it. I have found that if I cut a 45°
(estimate) bevel but I am close to perfect ghosting but a tiny bit too
strong, I can improve the ghost tone by the expedient of steepening the
angle of the bevel slightly. This allows some fine tuning without
risking the previous work. When the entire register is finished, I can
be sure that the "off" position will be silent and that I have the full
plectrum length available for voicing. I never adjust plectrum length
again. As to how one acquires the skill to ghost well, I have two
comments: 1) it is never "easy" but can be adequately mastered and 2)
practise, practise, practise.
I never ghost as part of doing modest repairs, such as replacing and
voicing individual plectra. When replacing a plectrum, I cut the
plectrum to a length and shape that apes its immediate neighbors as
closely as I can. By length, I mean the amount of extension beyond its
string when the register is "on" as that of its neighbors. It should
then be "off" when its neighbors are "off" and if shaped (plan view) the
same, should provide a good starting point for voicing.
Good luck!
