What it is NOT doing is shutting off at the end of play.  Also the dingus
for manyually lifting the tone arm doesn't work.  I am sure that you are
correct about how much it SHOULD cost to fix.  I intend either to figure out
how to fix it myself, or find somebody who will do it cheaper then these
guys.  We live two hours from Albuquerque, which is the closest place that
has a reasonable concentration of repair shops, so I justify paying through
the nose for a reconditioned one on the basis of how many trips to Abq I can
avoid.  I should have done some checking around by phone first.
 
It sounds as if you have some experience with these things.  I think DUAL
was a good make, and having the grease dry out after twenty odd years of
faithful service is not an unforgivable offense.
