I got off on another tangent in the last post. To remove an axle (if you
can see both ends) Pick the end where the axle pin is flatest. Use a
good vise to mount the body horizontal on edge. With a dressmakers awl
(not an ice pick) gentle tap on the axle keeping the awl in the center
of the pin. As soon as enough protrudes from the opposite side, use a
parallel jaw jewelers pliers to gently twist and pull on the pin.
Carefully extract the tongue and remove the old leather plectra by first
flush cutting the plectra end off and drilling four tiny corner holes
each about .020" with a number 80 drill (hobby shops) in a variable
speed mototool with appropriate collet. A sharp scalpel should enable
you to connect the holes and scrape out all bits of leather. A hardwood
plug with very slight taper can be carved to fit the square hole leaving
a small space for the plectra at the top. Avoid making the plug taper on
the sides or you will break the tongue. The taper should be top to
bottom and the plug should go in from the back and be pre trimmed not to
stick out under the plectrum. Trimming the back off flush might be
easier with another moto tool bit if you can find one and practice. You
will need the patience of a watchmaker for this! But it can be done.
Avoid using any glues or fillers! JP
