Hello - I can tell you what _inexperienced_ tuners do when
confronted with fretted instruments ...
I recall my first time. I had just proudly learned my first
repertoire of unequal temperaments; the Kinrberger family. I
was asked at the last minute to tune a harpsichord for a gig
with the young wunderkind of the 'gamba, and I set my very
best Kirnberger III.
Russell heard the pure c-e third, looked puzzled, fiddled around
for what seemed like some mu
minutes, looked puzzled some more, leaned over to ask the
harpsichordist (my partner) what was going on ...
Somehow he played the gig - I think it sounded a little odd.
Then he explained the problem to me.
These days the better 'gamba players would't be quite so
shocked - Margriet Tindemans is now quite agreeable to fiddling
around with frets and fingerings to make keyboard tuning a
little more rational. And I've learned to give a little on
that central third, and spread the goodness around somewhere
else.
