I'm rebuilding a large Zuckermann Flemish single.  A major task, 
including enlarging the keywell for a second manual, making two new 
keyboards, repairing a huge soundboard split from the tail to the 
boudin, and making wooden jacks with new guides.  This is one of those 
projects that sort of ran away with itself once I got into it.  It's my 
weekend  project with no deadline, so I don't need to justify shop time 
and can lavish attention as I wish.

Naturally I decided to do a full outrageous Flemish decoration scheme.  
Stripped off the ugly paint and managed to do an acceptable marbling 
(green porphory with white veining) and got the soundboard painting kit 
from Zuckermann by Sheila Barnes.  I must say the soundboard painting 
kit is amazingly detailed with templates, pigments and very detailed and 
complete instructions.  I had not painted since grade school, so I 
needed all the help I could get on painting technique.

So far the decoration is turning out better than I had dared to hope, 
and I'm now applying papering to the lid and rim.  The Mactaggart 
booklet on the subject has been a huge help.   After the papers come 
next the Latin mottoes to the main lid and lid flap.  I think I'll have 
"MVSICA LATITIE COMES MEDICINA DOLORVM" for the main lid and "SIC 
TRANSIT GLORIA MVNDI" for the flap. (I'll enjoy explaining to those who 
ask that the translation for the latter is "Gloria threw up on the bus 
last Monday.")

Here's my question:  should I orient the motto on the flap to be 
horizontal when the flap is open with the main lid, or horizontal when 
the flap is laid back with the main lid closed?  I understand that both 
methods were used.  I think either method has its pros and cons.  I may 
just flip a coin to decide.  What's the opinion?
