I think that’s because the image can’t be inline in the text but only as a link to an external website. I’m not sure but it seems the users don’t love that. Some forums still don’t allow images in the post and the users complain. Facebook is much more direct: here the image, here the comment.

Strangely enough, the same forum users who complain for images externally linked don’t complain at all for videos externally linked, so if must link to postimage (an image server specific for forums) someone will complain. But if you link to a youtube video everything is ok.
