I had a chance to read through the new Harpsichord
and Fortepiano a bit last night, and there are more
things you might like to know about (see posting on
subscription info).

"Soundboard" - a bulleting board of recent developments
and upcoming events in the "early keyboard world".

Three articles on the pros & cons of conservation and
restoration by Mimi Waitzman, Goran Grahn and David Winston

An uncredited article on the Colt Clavier Collection of
early pianos, a large but lesser-known collection in Kent
whose condition and fate have been subjects of speculation.

Book Reviews:

_Keyboard Musical Instruments in the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston_ by John Koster, with contributions by
Sheridan Germann & others. (a rave!) reviewed by
        Paul Irvin & Igor Kipnis.

_Bate Collection Demi-Catalogue No. 1_ by Jeremy Montagu
23 pages, reviewed by Kah-Ming Ng

_Bate Collection Handbooks: Francois Couperin: Pieces de
Clavecin - The Background_ by Jane Clark (22 pp)
        reviewed by Sophie Yates

CD Reviews:

Beau Genie - Pieces de Clavecin from the Bauyn Ms, vol 1
Jane Chapman, hpscd. Collins Classics 14202. rev. by
Stephen Patrick. [Ruckers double of 1614, meantone]
        Volume I of three.

Klavier 11041*. rev. by John Henry. [harpsichord details
not given (Willard Martin?)] "outstanding playing".

        English Eighteenth-century Keyboard Concertos. Paul
Nicholson, Parley of Instruments. Hyperion 66700*
rev. by Howard A Fenton. Music by Roseingrave, Arne,

Forqueray: Suites de Clavecin 1747. Arthur Haas, harpsi-
chord [J. Germain, Paris 1785] Wildboar 9201*. rev. by
David Bray. Incl. "La Forqueray" mvmts by Duphly & Rameau.

Edward Parmentier, hpd. [Keith Hill, after Ruckers 1640,
meantone] Wildboar 9102*. rev. by David Bray. "...the tuning
of the instrument (essentially quarter-comma meantone, with
a little 'fringing' adding colour to the sound when the
registers are coupled) is particularly effective, making
very striking the expressive dissonances of the music."

Scarlatti: Unpublished Sonatas. Mayako Sone, hpd. Erato 94806*
[David Ley, after Blanchet 1733] rev. by Howard A Fenton
Sone was a prize winner at Bruge 1986. She plays some of
the numerous sonatas and other pieces discovered since 1985.

Spanish and Portuguese Harpsichord. Sophie Yates, hpd.
[uncredited copy of Italian c.1600] Chandos 0560*. rev. by
Stephen Patrick. A fabulous recording (Joseph sez).

Waitzman and Jackson Amers, respectively.

Enjoy!
