At the urging of a board member, the Organ Media Foundation has been
producing more video content for our Youtube channel. Initially I
decided to just start taking along a video camera when I happened to
visit a church. That's turned into a weekly series where I talk with
the resident organist or someone else about the instrument in the
church. So far the series has literally been "where was I this week?"
with the choices of instruments dictated by whatever was going on in my
schedule. Recently I've had some people reach out to me to suggest I go
visit certain historic instruments, so that's what's coming up.
For instance, just today we published a look at a 1925 Hinners organ
with one manual and 4 ranks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skCQ41b2dfA . While not an especially
noteworthy instrument at first look, we see how Hinners was the master
of catalog sales of his instruments selling mainly to rural churches
across the country. This one has only had minor alterations since it's
original installation. While we were there, we also found two more
Hinners organs nearby, one built 20 years prior, but the stoplist and
mechanics were identical, showing how they found a formula to cheaply
build organs that work and never deviated from that plan. The other two
have been restored, and all three are still workhorses making music each
week. We'll see those two next week.
Anyway, you can see all of our videos on our YouTube channel at
