Ken & Agnes - I can't argue - but I also need to say...

Ed's been doing this *how* long? 8 months? And it is his *first*
position? Let's cut the guy some slack!

I've been accepting money from churches in return for playing for 20+
years. I would like to think I have served these various churches well -
but I also hope I can learn along the way.

I can often be surprised by what a particular hymn might mean to a
member or members of the church. I might think the tune is dreadful -
but - if I know that hearing it means something to someone present? I am
not going to argue.

I think Ed is doing pretty well. His "Encyclopedia of Organ Stops" is a
valuable addition to the online organ scene. And he asks some good
questions.

After 8 months in your first position, Ed - well, be thankful that you
get to pick the hymns. But that also entails a great responsibility.

Sometimes - a hymn tune you hate - well, it could well have meaning to a
member of your church (or visitor).

I have played at the same Presbyterian church for the last 12 years.
Under the rules of Presbyterian church governance, the pastor is
responsible for selecting the sung music (not that all do so).

The current minister does really well with hymn selection. On occasion I
might have some minor quibbles with his selections, but, overall - he
does an impressive job. And I *don't* have to do it - not a bad thing.
His emphasis is on the text, mine on the musicality and/or enjoyment of
playing the tune.

Who knows?
