And a short addendum ... 

Of all the various schemes which one might chose to "retune" during
a break in a performance, standard 1/4 mean would likely be the
very easiest.  The whole point of the exercise is the pure solid
major thirds, which can be detected even under somewhat determined
audience noise.  

Vastly easier than to try a "touch-up" at intermission, which 
requires playing and _hearing_ every single tempered interval!  

Sut about to address tempering issues for the Biber sonata cycle
to be heard in Seattle in three weeks - harpsichord[s], organ, 
lute and harp.  I'm sure we can make this more complicated ... 

Consider this a commercial for Seattle Baroque, Ingrid Matthews
and colleagues - in the _other_ Benaroya Hall.
