These were the ecstatic recordings of Melville Cook, made sometime around
the mid to late sixties, which I accreted at some very early stage in my
career, and had no small part in drawing me to the instrument. Despite
having long ago lost the cassette they came on, the clear memory of his
demonic performance still has the power to send shivers down my spine, not
unlike the effect of Jeanne Demessieux's through rebore of Widor's frightful
flapflap-flappity-flapflap.
A brief note on Simon Lindley's site at:
http://www.simonlindley.org.uk/leeds_parish_church_organ.html
...says that, though Cook died some time ago, his memory didn't, by his
legacy's generous funding of a Jubilee Trumpet.
Does anybody know if a complete (remastered?) set of Cook's recordings has
been released? The OHS has a partial set available at:
http://www.ohscatalog.org/ohscatalog/emigreatcato1.html
...but I'd be more taken with a full set.
thanks,
- robin.
