A few weeks ago, as I was planning the liturgy for today
(Easter 4, Year C) at our small Episcopal parish, I saw a pattern
developing and, just for fun, I decided to see if it could be made
to work: "All American hymns, appropriate to the season and/or
lections."
What we came up with was four 19th-century American tunes, two
with American texts:
Gradual - 439 "What wondrous love --" *Wondrous Love*
Offertory - 620 "Jerusalem, my happy home --" *Land of Rest*
Communion - 664 "My shepherd will supply --" *Resignation*
Closing - 213 "Come away to the skies --" *Middlebury*
Our talented organist pitched in with 20th-century American
voluntaries:
Prelude - from Ned Rorem's *A Quaker Reader*:
#4 - "There is a Spirit that Delights to Do No Evil" and
#8 - "No darkness at all"
Postlude - from Ernst Bloch's *Six Preludes*:
#3 - Andante (dedicated to Alexander Schreiner)
Coming soon: a service with all 20th-century American hymns,
and 19th-century American voluntaries!
BTW - our organ is a mid-19th century tracker, 58/13,
8-8-8-4-4-3-2/16-8.
