Hi Michael and All,
I saw your offering for this month and I hate to add any note of negativity to so
worthy a project as yours...but you note "two pieces by the organist G W Vanderbilt
hired to play the organ at Biltmore." However, there never was an organ at Biltmore
during GW's lifetime, although the architect provided space for one in the Banquet Hall.
The addition of a period correct house organ there occurred recently and it plays regularly
during tours throughout the day. I did google F. Flaxington Harker's name and find that he
was organist at All Souls Church in Asheville, the Episcopal church GW had built for the
Biltmore community. That area is now called Biltmore Estates, I believe.
Probably I am guilding the lily and all of you know exactly what Michael meant...it was interesting
to find out about Mr. Harker, though. Evidently he played at All Souls from 1901 to 1904, left for NYC
and then returned to All Souls again for seven years beginning in 1907...later playing at a church in
Richmond, Virginia.
Keep up the good work, Michael.
Best Regards,
Roy Kersey
