Bob:

I have a strange feeling that the Rutter piece can be performed without
accompaniment as most church anthems are. So that argument might
be effectively mute.

If you really read what I said: the pipe organ sounds better when the
tuning more closely approximates the natural speaking harmonics
of the speaking pipes. You play a six rank organ, obviously with
unit mutations, and perhaps a wired mixture, and even a wired tierce.
Can you use those without upsetting the sound in the plenum? Tuned to ET.
Straight stops sound even better outside ET. Just trying to get you to
think for a minute outside the standard box. I'm sure a lot of pieces would
sound a bit badly if the wrong choice is used, but mild forms of temperament
sound quite nice even in the far keys.

In ET the thirds are nearly canceling themselves being over 15 beats sharp.
Unit Nazards are not nearly so bad as tierces.
