There were two organ recitals this evening in NYC. No doubt Malcolm was
at Kent Tritle's at St. Iggy. The other was part of a week-long
festival of the music of Charles Ives at Juilliard.
Before the main event this evening, Cameron Carpenter played all the
organ works of Ives on the Walter Holtkamp organ in Paul Hall. He
concluded with the familiar Variations on "America," which was the only
piece I had heard before.
The others, from the beginning:
Adeste Fidelis in and Organ Prelude (ca 1903)
Fugue in c minor (ca 1898)
Canzonetta in F Major (ca 1893-4)
Fugue in E-Flat Major (ca 1898)
Carpenter played beautifully in everything, with devotion and flair,
and just the right amount of showmanship, I thought. Every piece was
worth hearing, although except for the Adeste didn't really hint at
what he would be doing in very few years. The fugues sounded something
like John Knowles Paine.
The Adeste Fi started with a dulciana and flute, slow melody over a
pedal point both in mid keyboard, sounding a lot like some Franck. The
tune didn't become recognizable until well along, and then ony by
indirection.
All the unpublished pieces will soon be issued by the Ives archive. He
used the Biggs edition of the America variations.
