You don't say anything about the nature of the instrument that you're
playing. But surely any approach you take that has musical integrity
can be defended -- considering that this piece has been played
successfully as a sort of neo-Baroque work (cf. the recordings of Biggs
and Noehren) and as a Romantic fantasia (the recording by T. Murray in
Woolsey Hall), and many of us aim for something in between.
But since you ask: it's such a major movement and you're playing it
already this coming Sunday. I'd say follow your own instincts and
delight your folks without reference to what others do!
But maybe the rest of the brothers and sisters of The List will have
better advice. (I'm answering now because your post is an hour old and
I happen to have had a phone call from Australia this evening, so am
very much conscious of how few North American responses you're likely
to get before your day's practice session is over!)
