Joe, to the best of my recollection
>German Division Names
>Can anyone tell me what these divisions >would be called on an American
organ?:
1. Oberwerk
Could be a positiv or swell, "ober" referring to it's place in the
upper portion of the case
2. Mittelwerk
I would assume this division is placed in the center of the case,
and again could be a positive or swell
3. Brustwerk (Swell, I think [Schwellwerk])
Again this is a simple identification by position in the lower
portion (breast) of the case just above the keydesk.

My understanding of German nomenclature is that there are basically two
principal manual divisions of the organ: Hauptwerk or Great (and)
Positiv or Choir/Positive. Both of these divisions are related in
function, both having a complete principal chorus, but the Positiv being
somewhat lighter. The other divisions are designed with various
purposes in mind (i.e. continuo, solo cornet, etc) and are simply
identified by their position in the case (Oberwerk - upper, Mittelwerk -
middle, Hinterwerk - behind, Brustwerk - "breast" or low central
position, Rugwerk - on the rail, although this is most often the
Ruckpositiv)
4. Ripieno (this one is French)
Seems this one is Italian and designated a large mixture composed of
various principal stops in the harmonic series.
