Why - My childhood was filled with the idyllic consonance of true
major thirds, notably in the middle of Frescobaldi elevation
toccatas, until in college I met for the first time the True Horror
of an E-dur cadence left unresolved by the terrible scratching of
Kellner's "Bach" fantasies! It all has to do with the purity of
the Clearwater River, where no mercury was to be found despite the
history of gold mining in north Idaho.
One _has_ heard horrors. When Fritz Noack had his little organ first
in First Lutheran of West Seattle (Seattle,) 'twas tuned in "Kirnberger
II," which is not very homogenized. One recalls the verrie same
Margaret Irwin-
Brandon's playing of the Wedge, which was wonderful 'till the final
cadence revealed those same terrifying E-dur stretched major thirds.
Just about the same, indeed, as they'd have been in ET; but one would
not have come into that cold from the gentle warmth of the preceeding
adventures in ET.
I eat my Thai food - too much of it - too spicy, and take too many
peppers from the jar at my favourite Mexican hangout too. Some
would like the food blander. But, ask I, why bother to go?
A microtonalist friend once reported, after one Thai feast, "that
may have been the best meal of my life. I was sick for a week."
Meantone is Good For You. Face it!
