I think Jim would have been exquisitely delighted with the present state of
the Naval Academy Chapel organ. When the Moller was removed for a year or so
in order to permit the installation of air conditioning, a three manual
Rodgers was temporarily installed. Jim had originally placed his plans for a
CD on hold, but he was so delighted with the sound of the Rodgers that he
proceeded with his recording plans on the instrument at hand--all digital.
I don't know whether Sebastian has actually seen and heard the organ since
its enlargement but I can testify, having heard it in concert, that it is a
stunningly effective and thoroughly musical instrument and a triumph of the
art of combining pipes and digital sounds seamlessly. The added "fakery" (as
some would have it) works quite compellingly and adds lots of coloristic
possibilities to the organ's specification.
Indeed, I encourage all skeptics to see, hear, and play this instrument for
themselves rather than accepting without question the judgment of those
among us whose pronouncements seem occasionally to reflect greater pursuit
of wit than wisdom.
