Stephen Tharp played a wonderful concert on the big Dobson at Verizon Hall
in the Kimmel Center in downtown Philadelphia on Wednesday, July 11th.He
used the electric console, which was at center stage. The program:

Tu es Petrus, from "Esquisses Byzantines" (1919) Henri Mulet

Organ Sonata No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 65, No. 2 Mendelssohn
    I. Grave-Adagio
   II. Allegro maestoso e vivace
  III. Fuga: Allegro moderato

Prelude and Fugue in C Major (1964) Jeanne Demessieux

Nimrod from "Enigma Variations," Op. 36 Elgar
(Transcribed for organ by Stephen Tharp)

Toccata and Fuga Sinfonica on B A C H (1999) Anthony Newman (b 1941)
(Commissioned by and dedicated to Stephen Tharp.)

Symphonie No. 5 in A Minor, Op. 47 Vierne
   IV. Larghetto

The Fair, from "Petrouchka" (1911) Stravinsky
(Transcribed for organ by Stephen Tharp)

We were all treated to a wide variety of sounds from the organ, anywhere
from just a single stop per manual to a majestic ensemble sound. Tu es
Petrus started out quiet, then built to a spectacular finish. I
especially liked the first movement of the Mendelssohn--the quiet stuff
near the end of the first movement was beautiful. Nimrod was very well
done--the beautiful ending was acomplished by carefully removing stops and
using the swell shades. The Stravinsky piece was probably the most fun
version I have heard.

There were around 300 people in the audience, so there is room for many
more. This was the first try at a week day evening concert. There are 3
more this month: Wednesday, July 18 is Sean Jackson; Wednesday, July 25
is Ken Cowan; and Wednesday, August 1 is Barbara Dennerlein, a jazz
organist from Germany. Concert times are at 7:00 PM; they are scheduled
to run about 70 minutes; tickets are a very reasonable $10. There are
many excellent places to dine in the neighborhood, either before or after
the concert.
