(Remembrance Sunday)
9.30am High Mass:

Parry: Andante

Propers: Si iniquitates
Service: Jackson in G
Motet: Let us now praise famous men - Vaughan Williams

Int: O God, our help - St Anne
Grad: Just as I am - Misericordia
Off: Glorious things of thee - Austria
Com: Thee we adore - Adoro te devote
Rec: I vow to thee, my country - Thaxted

Elgar: Pomp & Circumstance March, No 4 in G major
                  (arr. Hesford)

A few notes:

1. After the discussion on the list, I deliberately set Austria
for "Glorious things of thee" - which was on the hymn list
because of the lessons and with no intended reference to
Remembrance Sunday. Still, it was interesting that quite a
few congregants, especially some who actually fought in WWII,
expressed their appreciation for having had the tune. They
all, with one accord, characterised it as being a
telling gesture of reconciliation. So we can make quite
powerful points with our music, can we not?

2. The place was groaning with retired clergy again this morning
        - I made it one bishop and four priests. What I can not for
the life of me understand is why, having wrecked decent
liturgy and liturgical music at the several establishments
they have "graced", they should come rushing off to St
Michael's at the first available opportunity? (Actually, to
be fair, the bishop in question wasn't a wrecker...but the
conundrum remains.) They're like closet Anglo-Catholics
who've been playing liturgically "straight" for years and are
now coming out and demonstrating their true colours -
love of a good old High Mass, with all the accoutrements, and
solid Anglican music. On the latter score, St Mick's
isn't always terribly "Anglican" of course; but this
morning they got a full dose of Jackson, Vaughan
Williams, Holst, Elgar and St Anne, ("Holy Annie, God's
        Granny, ora pro nobis") .

3. Summer is icumen in ... it's as glorious a day as you could
imagine down here. We simply HAVE to organize some
international pipe organ do for y'all to attend! (Reaching
for another G&T and peering out over the roses and
the South Atlantic in the vague direction of Rio ......

Cheers!!!!
