Well, folks - here at the Kirk, through more than thirty years of organ
concerts, we've been fortunate to have "heard them all", as some say.
This week we have heard from one of the V E R Y V E R Y best!
Peter Conte made friends with one hundred ranks, two concert grand
pianos, all the percussions and MADE MUSIC - such as we've rarely
heard! It was total JOY!
Here at the Kirk, presenting three consecutive concerts, Mr. Conte took
his personal art of orchestral arranging to consummation...Frankly, we
debated posting on the excellence of these concerts this week, but we
decided "how will they know if we don't tell 'em"...
If you ever find an opportunity to hear this guy at Longwood Gardens or
Lord & Taylor Wanamakers - RUN for the chance! He really wound our
audiences up! It was refreshing to hear new found combinations...AND
within an orchestral "style" ALL his own.
A stellar performance of a stellar program:
Fanfare (Chuckerbutty); Aria (Swinnen); Overture to Iolanthe
(Sullivan); Arabesque (Debussy); Danse Macabre (Saint-Saens);
Londonderry Aire (Hebble); Suite from Carmen (Bizet); Overture
to HMS Pinafore (Sullivan); Emperor Waltz (Strauss); Gershwin
Medley, including Rhapsody In Blue (Conte); Danse of the Hours
(Ponchielli); The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Dukas).
Following our seven December Christmas Fantasy concerts and three
January concerts, Mr. Conte will return with Rudolph Lucente, Michael
Stairs and Colin Howland to form the Philadelphia Organ Quartet. They
will play the Kirk Pipe Organ and three Renaissance Digital Organs. The
dates are: Friday Evening 8 PM January 22 and Saturday Afternoon 2 PM
January 23. All seating is reserved - admission is $15.00 - telephone
727-733-KIRK for information.
TC - come to Florida - hear its best kept organ secret!
