Which is as it should be.

What's better?

To charge for use of the organ and possibly discriminate against a
student who may not HAVE the money - even a few dollars - on top of all
the other expenses they have? (Some of you old farts who haven't been in
school for a while need a reality check on the daunting costs of
tuition, books, living expenses, etc.)? I know students who can't even
afford to eat at MacDonalds. If they can't scrounge up the money for a
four-dollar meal, where is payment for "console rental fees" going to
come from?

Or to have an open-console policy for students who have demonstrated
responsibility, who won't come in and tear the place up or burn it down
or have orgies in the organ chambers? Suppose, just suppose, that young
person you encourage - by making him/her feel welcome at your console -
may turn into the next [insert name of favorite organist legend]?

Really. What are people so AFRAID of? (That the student might be a
better organist.......?)

Sorry. But "stingy console policy" is just really one of my biggest pet
peeves.

And I have found that the stingier the policy, the less valuable the
instrument in nearly every case. [Historic locations etc. notwithstanding]

I've had a number of splendid pilgrimage instruments at my disposal over
the years while being locked out of mongrel pipe collections [or some
crappy old electronic] that have not been tuned, serviced, or played
properly for decades. If ever.
