Let’s face it—to the average person in the pew, indeed, to the average
musician, all the various tunings are esoteric enough that most people are
not interested. On more than one occasion I have visited small
congregations where the piano was painfully out of tune (as in cheap piano
surely not tuned for at least twenty years) and the congregations sang
cheerfully along. Once I mentioned to the person sitting next to me that I
could hardly bear it and was gritting my teeth, and she—and educated person
with some musical training—said, “Oh, really, I hadn’t noticed.”

If I were a sewing machine, I'd just raise my foot, and all my tension would
be gone.
