Happy New Year!
Tonight marked the 9th Annual New Year's Eve Organist's Kaleidophone.
What began as an experiment has evolved into a well attended event.
This year there were approximately 200 people in attendance.
The event takes place at the (recently renamed) Peace United Church
of Christ in Santa Cruz, CA and features Aeolian Skinner Opus 1341
installed in 1957 and enlarged in the mid-1990's. Donations go to
bolstering the organ's maintenance fund.
This year the program included a survey asking attendees to choose
their favorite piece(s) from past years or propose pieces that they
would like to hear next year at the 10th annual event. Over the
years over 180 pieces by over 100 composers have been performed by
30 musicians.
Last year Rick Berg offered to this list a PDF of variations by
Spanish composer Jesus Guridi. I had given a copy of the PDF to
Vlada Volkova-Moran after last year's concert and she included it
in this evening's program. I quite enjoyed them.
Here's the (eclectic) program:
Sinfonia from Catata No. 29, Bach, arr. Whitford
- Bruce Sawhill, Organ
Redwood Cathedral, John Hyde
- Vlada Volkova-Moran, Organ, Tatyana Rekow, Oboe
Voluntary in D Minor, Opus 5, No., 8 John Stanley
- Nicki Kerns, Organ

Go Tell it on the Mountain Settings by Johannes Michel

Entertainer, Scott Joplin arr. E. P. Biggs

Andante Maestoso, Jupiter, from The Planet, Gustav Holts arr. Arthur Wills
Sleigh Ride, Leroy Anderson arr. Thomas Trotter
Radetzky March, Johann Strauss arr. Noel Rassthrone
- Colin Whitby-Strevens, Organ
The audience joined in singing Auld Lang Syne and then adjourned to
a chocolate and champagne reception.
If I have any complaint it is that the concert is a tad long. But
there was certainly something for almost any taste and the musical
gifts from the perfomers are much appreciated. A huge Thank-You to
Vlada Volkova-Moran for arranging this (now) very popular event.
