Well I do not know if you would call them a
primitive Pittman. The Moller pitmans had
(and I think the other ones also) and little
rods with leather discs attached. These
acted like little "check" valves. The membrane
did act like a sorta check valve but more as
a seal. It is a fine difference. The thing about
the Mollers pitman chests that I liked was where
the bottom board was attached there was a paper
seal. These kept little leather pitmans in when
you removed the bottom boards. When you called
Moller to order these they called them "toilet seats".
Some how explaining that the organ needed several
hundred "toilet seats" was more fun than telling
them that they needed "pitman retainers". :-)
