Hi Ken,

re: ["I asked him whether he would be voicing it
for the room. He said that one needed special equipment to do the
voicing. So voicing wasn't even considered as part of the installation."]

If the new instrument is an Allen, all the technician needs is a laptop with
the Allen voicing software("DOVE"), a cable, and of course ...some knowledge
and experience to use them. All of the issues you listed should be a piece
of cake and easily accessible through the laptop.

Are you located in Toronto, what is the brand and model, and do I dare ask,
"who is the dealership"?

Pax,
Daryel

Subject: Voicing Electronic Organs - was "Discussing the "electronic"
Organ"

Hi List members:

A recent church installation of a new Brand A (digital sampled) organ to
replace an outdated Brand R, comprised of the following:

        - dismantling and removal of the old organ and speakers
        - installation of the new organ and speakers
        - slight redirection of the speakers (turning them 30 degrees)
to try to balance the sound somewhat
        - pack-up and depart

This all totalled approximately 5 hours of work by one person (although
a couple of others helped moving the instruments).

I (the organist) tried it out while the technician was there. After
playing it for a few minutes, I asked him whether he would be voicing it
for the room. He said that one needed special equipment to do the
voicing. So voicing wasn't even considered as part of the installation.

I have now had time to really work with the organ and, although a great
improvement over the outdated Brand R, I dislike it because of the
following:

        - The expression pedals (one for the Great and one for the
Swell) do not provide enough dynamic range (e.g. quiet is not quiet
enough, and loud is not loud enough.
        - the diapasons are much too loud and overpower all other stops
        - to a lesser degree, other stops do not appear balanced
        - the organ sounds as if it was boxed in - the sound is not
"intimate" as if the speakers were inadequate

Should it be expected the company selling and installing the organ
should have spent the time to make the adjustments noted above, or are
these problems either not fixable, or are typically not considered part
of the "normal" installation?

I would be interested in your comments on these issues.

Kindest regards,

Ken Bales

Subject: Fw: Discussing the "electronic" Organ

Since I keep hearing about "properly voiced and installed" electronic
organs, I'd like to know why would they be installed in any other way.
Who else installs them but the dealers? And if the dealers are doing it
improperly, then why doesn't the company send someone from the factory
to inspect the installations to make sure?

Dear Gary and List

VALID QUESTION!

I guess the principal answer is
that ALL the brands survive on
sales and their dealers are in
principal, Salespeople.
