Was anybody else on the list present at a lecture given by Owen
Jorgenson in 1975, at East Lansing, MI? Or maybe it was Ann Arbor - all
I really remember about the venue was that it was a pretty good-sized
auditorium, packed to overflowing with attendees.
Jorgenson had five pianos on stage, all tuned to different temperaments,
one of them being a specially odd one - a unique one of his devising. I
personally thought it was more a unique scale rather than a temperament,
but what did I know at the time? I don't remember any details of it
except that it had a modal quality rather than a tonal/chromatic
quality. I believe this was about the time he published his famous book
on temperaments; perhaps it is described in the book?
Jorgenson was a pretty good pianist, playing an early Beethoven sonata
or two to demonstrate the various temperaments. I was very interested
in both harpsichords and organs at the time, and was hoping something on
those instruments might be present, but not so.
